When you go home
tell them of us and say,
for your tomorrow
we gave our today.”

John Maxwell Edmonds 1879-1958

This site is a “work in progress” document to help in the creation of a “Memorial book” for the War dead of the Winscombe and Sandford Parish.

Winscombe and Sandford Parish is in North Somerset and is home to around 4,000 people in an area of around six square miles on the north-western side of the Mendip Hills between Cheddar and the seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare.

The creation of the “Memorial Book” is the work of a small group of local volunteers supported by the Winscombe Branch of the Royal British Legion and the PCC of St. James’ Church.

We have tried to bring together as much information as we can for each of the names recorded on the main War Memorials and other memorials, graves and plaques in the Parish. The aim of this project being to preserve in the community the memory of these men as individuals rather than just initials and surnames.

In many cases this information is quite detailed; in a few we do not know any more than the inscription on the memorial.

It is hoped that the final outcome will be a permanent display at St James and also available for further research though the library as well as this site

The volunteers regret any unintentional error or inaccuracy there may be our research and would be pleased to here from anyone if there is an error or omission.

If you have any information regarding any of the people mentioned on this site, or you think should be honoured here, we would be very grateful for your memories, photographs or anecdotes = please contact us through “WWMP@Craigside.com”
